As a child, I often felt left out when my classmates returned to school after the Christmas break and talked about their numerous expensive gifts, new clothes, and sneakers…..
I didn’t get gifts–I received necessities. The usual gifts were underwear, socks, maybe a new outfit, and one or two small token toys — usually a stocking toy or a game to share with my sisters and brothers. One time, the gifted toy was broken and never replaced. My mom would try to buy gifts, but with six kids to provide for, they were not expensive or numerous and definitely not on the “most-desired” toy lists. The lack of gifts made me feel inferior to my peers.
I will never forget the feeling of being less than at school, that’s why I volunteer with Elf Louise and donate to the Christmas Project. ALL children should feel good about themselves. They should not feel separated from classmates due to family financial disparity. Not all families can afford to buy Christmas gifts. Rent, utilities, and necessities must be paid first and take priority. Elf Louise steps in when families aren’t able — we provide the toys for them!
Please donate to Elf Louise to provide gifts to the children of San Antonio who might not otherwise have a Christmas.
