The Elf Louise Christmas Project began in 1969 when Louise Locker and her mother, Anne, decided to secretly give toys to 13 families. It began after Louise’s father died, and she wanted to do something good and give away her childhood dolls. After seeing an article about abandoned letters to Santa, she convinced the Post Office to let her read them. Louise was deeply moved by the children’s letters and did not want to leave the children without a Christmas. She decided to make Christmas possible for some very lucky children. And just like that “Elf Louise” was born.
What began as a kindness to children during a sorrowful time became a lasting legacy of goodness to the children of San Antonio. Since 1969, hundreds of thousands of people have volunteered time and donated toys to the Elf Louise organization. Funds have provided over 1.5 million children (and still counting!) presents with a visit from Santa. The project continues with over 30 Core Volunteers who work year-round to ensure underserved children in San Antonio receive gifts; 4,500 annual volunteers with 400 Santa Teams!
After 50 active years with the Elf Louise project, Louise retired. Louise continues to be part of our fundraising efforts and loves to share the stories of how it all began. Louise continues her counseling work and is writing and working on new ventures. She loves being a gramma as well.
